A Guide to Greeting in Medina

A Guide to Greeting in Medina

A Guide to Greeting in Madinah

The Spiritual Meaning of Entering Madinah

Madinah is the blessed city where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated, established the Islamic state, and where the Companions lived. For every Muslim visiting this holy city, one of the most important acts is to greet the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) with respect and proper etiquette.

Entering Al-Masjid an-Nabawi

  • Before entering the Prophet’s Mosque, it is recommended to be in a state of ablution and to wear clean clothes.

  • Step inside with the right foot first, saying the supplication:
“Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik” (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy).

  • Upon entering, maintain calmness, avoid unnecessary conversation, and keep a state of reverence.

The Rawdah and Greeting Etiquette

The Rawdah, the area between the Prophet’s tomb and his pulpit, is described as a garden from Paradise. Worship and supplication here carry immense virtue.

Greeting the Prophet (pbuh)

  • Approach respectfully, without raising the voice, and say:
“As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Rasūlallāh” (Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah).

  • Then continue:
“As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Nabiyyallāh” (Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah).

  • And:
“As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Habīb Allāh” (Peace be upon you, O Beloved of Allah).

Greeting Abu Bakr (r.a.) and Umar (r.a.)

  • Next to the Prophet’s resting place is the grave of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). One may say:
“As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Abā Bakr, As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Khalīfata Rasūlillāh”.

  • Then turn slightly to greet Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him):
“As-salāmu ‘alayka yā ‘Umar, As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Fārūq”.

Important Etiquette During the Greeting

  • Do not turn your back to the Prophet’s resting place; instead, face the Qiblah when making du‘ā.

  • Avoid taking photos, speaking loudly, or pushing in crowds.

  • Remember that this is a visit and greeting, not a ritual act of worship—maintain balance and respect.

Additional Etiquette While in Madinah

  • Pray as much as possible in the Prophet’s Mosque, and strive to make du‘ā in the Rawdah.

  • Visit important historical sites such as Uhud, Quba Mosque, and the Battle of the Trench area.

  • Show kindness, patience, and respect to fellow visitors, locals, and mosque staff.
